A Christmas Memory

Filed under: Uncategorized — cbkessler @ 1:49 pm

In my family there have been many wonderful memories that we have been blessed with during the Christmas Seasons. This season has to be right up there with the best of them as we were given a snowy “white’ Christmas AND the fact that this was a our Granddaughter’s (our daughter’s) first Christmas! You can’t get any better than that. We played Dominoes, laughed, and truly enjoyed a wonderful evening away from the blizzard that was causing so much havoc outside. Our Granddaughter new exactly what to do with the very first gift placed in her hands- rip and eat the ribbon! Tasty! Well, that’s what gifts are for.

I have to pause here to reflect on a memory that happened years ago when only my father and I were struggling and making it on our own. He had been working late all Christmas week. He had been at that time working for a paper mill in Savannah, Ga and coming home tired and worn out. We had yet to put up a tree for Christmas and I was afraid he had forgotten when at the last moment (a few days before Christmas Day) he left me some money to run up to Johnson’s to buy one and later on that night he and I would decorate it. I couldn’t wait. I was so excited and then and there decided that I would surprise him by having the tree all decorated when he got home! I knew how tired he would be and so I was on a mission. All afternoon I decorated that tree to perfection then as he was pulling into the driveway I quickly moved the tree behind the door so that he wouldn’t immediately be able to see the “surprise”. Oh, I was filled with anticipation and I could already envision my dad’s reaction! But alas, what actually happened next was certainly not what I had imagined at all for you see as my dad opened the front door he did so quickly and it flew open all the way knocking down the prized tree that I had worked so feverishly on for him! Oh, it was horrible. Everything was ruined or at least that’s what was running through my tearful crushed mind. Within seconds however my wise father summed up the situation and gave me the biggest bear hug and a loving thank you a boy could ever want from his dad. To this day I would not be able to tell you a single present I received that Christmas but the gift that I do remember is one of many special life memories that isn’t purchased or wrapped but delivered with a loving hug.

Have you been outside today?  Well, here in Norman, OK  we have a ice/snow storm that is bringing in a White Christmas!  We haven’t enjoyed that here for a while, so, thank you Jesus!  Remember that great song- “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas”?

“I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas”

Anyway, everyone please enjoy your Christmas Holiday and never forget the fact that when Jesus was born He was born to be a King and a Savior.  Is He both to you?

God Bless and Merry Christmas,

Bruce
