What To Do On May 22?

Filed under: Uncategorized — cbkessler @ 2:24 am

Armageddon, judgment day, annihilation, destruction, second coming, and the rapture are set to occur tomorrow May 21, 2011. That’s right. An army of angels will come down slicing and dicing taking vengeance on those who know not God! There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth! God will grind all his enemies into dust! Heads will roll. The earth will melt with fervent heat! And guess what? It’s just around the corner. Perhaps you have heard of this impending doom (or joy if you are a genuine believer) through various media interviews within the last several days. You may have already heard of this bold prediction via “Project Caravan” which has been scampering energetically about the country with slogans on the side of their RV’s stating “Have you heard the awesome news? The End of the World is almost here!” This mantra and trumpeted call of doomsday is being gleefully announced by Harold Camping and Family Radio of Oakland, California. No question though. It is May 21st! That’s the literal, actual, and precise date thank you please! Don’t doubt it. Bank on it. It’s tomorrow. Why, just this week I came across the story of the guy in New York given up his entire savings ($104,000) to shout aloud through pamphlets that this date is truly and unmistakably the true judgment day. Remarkably he gives us one more detail to chew on and wonder or worry about- this will all occur promptly at 6pm. Set your watches please tonight.

But before you set your watches for tomorrow, May 21st, wait! Scientists have also eagerly and breathlessly joined these doomsday predictions. Through tedious study and laboriously combing through alarming statistics scientist are now suggesting that the earth has already used up about half of its life span and therefore in about 5 billion years (or as Carl Sagan used to say, “Billions and billions”) the Sun will become unstable and form into a red giant! Super Nova! These natural events will totally envelope the earth. Earthquakes of the likes we’ve never seen, floods that will rival The Great Flood, monstrous tidal waves, volcanoes will erupt like nitrogen bombs, and if that is not enough these cataclysmic forces will rip the earth to shreds! Happily no one will survive. Humans are ungrateful anyway and thus are deserving of this extinction. The prevailing unspoken thought is disappointment that it doesn’t happen 4,999,997,988 years sooner. No specific date given, yet.

I write this because what else are we going to do? Cry? Panic? Throw in the towel? Confront these folks? No, I think we should just step aside, be amused, but more importantly be thoughtful and polite. We can learn something from all of this-the Medias hysterical treatment of this prediction, the man behind the prediction, and the people who are being seduced. In Acts we find a doctor with great influence over the Jewish people in a time when passions were stirred up. Even though he wasn’t a Christian his advice makes perfect sense. He put it like this in Acts 5:38-39, “So in the present case I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or this undertaking is of man, it will fail; but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You might even be found opposing God!” So they took his advice.” We should take his advice. If this teaching or prediction is purely a fabrication of man then you can be assured that nothing will happen tomorrow May 21st. If this should somehow be a revelation directly from God, well, dear reader hopefully I’ll see you on that other shore.

I doubt that the misguided but apparently sincere Harold Camping claims will come true. Why? Jesus said simply in Matthew 25:13 “So you, too, must keep watch! For you do not know the day or hour of my return.” Now I believe Jesus over any man any day. So should you. My prayer is that, on Sunday May 22nd and every day if the Lord wills and the Judgment day has not come, you and I will be doing exactly what Jesus and the Apostle Peter have asked us to do. 2 Peter 3:14 “And so, dear friends, while you are waiting for these things to happen, make every effort to be found living peaceful lives that are pure and blameless in his sight.” Harold Camping is right in the respect that Judgment Day is coming. God has chosen not to include us in His plans as to the exact time or date so every day is a day of urgency and expectation. The question is simple. What will you do on Sunday May 22?
